Town: The Braes of Balquhidder are accessible from the A84 by a single-track road. It is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is located at the northernmost point of Loch Lomond and Trossachs Country Park. West of the town, 4 miles down the glen to Monachyle Mhor, is the magnificent Loch Voil. Rich in mythology and history, the Celts considered it to be a "thin realm" where there is little separation between the spiritual and physical worlds. The remains of the first Balquhidder kirk, which dates from 1631, contain the grave of Rob Roy MacGregor, a notorious 17th-century bandit who resided in and around the region. The headstone of St. Angus, an early Christian missionary who brought Christianity to the region in the 7th century, is located inside the current church, which was constructed in 1855.
